An
algorithm is a finite sequence of explicitly defined, step-by-step computational procedures which ends in a clearly defined outcome.(1) Though there are various algorithms for the four arithmetic operations, there are
standard algorithms which had been traditionally taught to students. Note, the standard algorithm methods vary somewhat by nation and time but the underlying mathematical ideas remain the same. There has been much debate regarding the teaching of standard algorithms resulting in differing levels of emphasis in various school curriculums.
