Partial Product Method of Multiplication

Partial Products Algorithm
1) Write the two numbers that are to be multiplied in expanded form.
2) Multiply each part of the expanded form of one number (the multiplier) by each part of the expanded form of the other number (the multiplicand).
3) Add the partial products

Example
Multiply 84 and 36 using the partial products multiplication method.

1) We expand 84 and 36.

84 x 36 = (80 + 4) x (30 +6)

2) We multiply each part of the expanded form of 84, with each part of the expanded form of 36.

= (6 x 4) + (6 x 80) + (30 x 4) + (30 x 80)
= 24 + 480 + 120 + 2400

Algorithm & Standard Algorithms

An algorithm is a finite sequence of explicitly defined, step-by-step computational procedures which ends in a clearly defined outcome.(1) Though there are various algorithms for the four arithmetic operations, there are standard algorithms which had been traditionally taught to students. Note, the standard algorithm methods vary somewhat by nation and time but the underlying mathematical ideas remain the same. There has been much debate regarding the teaching of standard algorithms resulting in differing levels of emphasis in various school curriculums.
